Moreira Chonguiça
Mozambican jazz-saxophonist, composer, and producer Moreira Chonguiça remains feted as one of the finest exponents of innovative and original jazz from Africa.
As an autonomous artist with eight award-winning, globally-informed, and celebrated albums – he continues to build a veritable superhighway from his east-African roots to the world.
His latest album, Sounds of Peace, released in November 2022, explores the traditional musical influences of Mozambique within jazz. The record celebrates the diversity, differences, and similarities among African people effected by the diverse jazz-fuelled sway that permeates its borders.
Exposed to and inspired by the likes of Miles Davis, Hugh Masekela, Fela Kuti, Wayne Shorter, Courtney Pine, Percy Sledge and Manu Dibango, Moreira’s energetic contemporary rhythmic compositions garner ever-rousing applause across all six continents.
Complement that with his unique sound, innate talent, technical agility, and ingenuity on the alto and soprano saxophone, coupled with passionate stage performance, and what he delivers captivates audiences everywhere.
Moreira’s passion, drive, and devoted philanthropic investment in promoting Mozambican culture and lifestyle through jazz have seen the production of his Morejazz Series festival since 2012, and the formation of the Morejazz Big Band in 2014 has become a permanent fixture on the Mozambican jazz landscape.
